The time has come to get to work and become a soldier in planning the move of your belongings from your office or home to your new mini storage unit. Making a list will allow you to keep items organized and safe during a move, whether from across the city or the world, and get the most out of our storage solutions in Panama. Sometimes it’s hard to know how many things you have until you try to move them; the first step of any move is getting rid of what you don’t need so you only take up space with what truly matters. Our experts recommend making a detailed inventory that allows you to cross-reference box numbers and furniture labels. That way, you’ll know where everything is when it arrives and you can follow up with the moving company.
What Should the List Include?
The first details you must have on a moving list are the time and dates the moving of the objects will take place. The rest of the list will depend on what items you want to store, or rather, where they come from.
For residential moves: You can place objects in boxes according to each space they belong to at home; for example, put kitchen things together in one box and don’t mix them with other types of objects, living room decorations, or bathroom items.
For office moves: Divide objects according to what they are for and their frequency of use; for example, inventory stationery should not be mixed in the same box with invoices or financial statements from past years. Even if you consider that a box has extra space to fit more things, it is better for each category to have its own place so that in the future, when you need these objects, you can find them easily.
Things to Do Before the Move
Make sure to prepare everything in advance:
- Carefully look for a hauling company; we can recommend, with no obligation, some of the ones we have seen work for our clients.
- Book a hauling company as far in advance as possible. There are times when there is more demand than others for their services, so it is best to schedule your appointment ahead of time.
- Organize and eliminate items you no longer need; this will save you time and packing products.
- Sort your things and group similar objects into moving boxes.
- Look for the original receipts of expensive items and take them with you.
- Consider taking videos to show the working condition of electronic devices. Take photos of furniture and other expensive items. You can even take photos of the boxes before closing them.
- Gather packing supplies: boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, old blankets, and labels.
- Prepare in advance a blank numbered inventory list and matching numbered inventory stickers. Have extra labels just in case they are needed.
- Pack important documents, small valuables, and sentimental possessions, and if you can, take them with you yourself.
- If you cannot be present when the movers arrive at your new unit, designate a trusted person to receive them.
Moving Day Tip
Don’t lose sight of each box to ensure your things arrive safe and sound at the truck. Treat moving day as a workday. Make sure boxes carrying heavy objects are marked as such and that the descriptions on the inventory sheet are very specific.
