When you desperately need an extra gardening tool, a backup appliance, or an important document, the last thing you want to do is empty your entire storage unit and start unpacking boxes. A little effort dedicated to organizing your storage unit will save you many headaches in the long run.
The Packing Process
Before you start packing the unit, you need to find a convenient, reliable, and secure storage facility. Before tossing items randomly into boxes, make a list and assign items to their corresponding box. Use labels so you know the contents of the boxes.
Identify items that are marked for easy access: seasonal clothing, camping or sports gear, holiday decorations, important documents, etc. Items you will use frequently should be packed last.
Pro Tip: Fill Your Boxes
Do not leave boxes partially empty. Fill the entire box, placing heavy items at the bottom and filling the rest of the capacity with lighter items.
Organize
Create a general plan of how you will arrange furniture and boxes in your unit. Ideally, large furniture and appliances should be against a wall opposite the boxes. Leave space in the middle of the unit for easy access.
Before storing your boxes, place pallets on the floor to prevent pests and moisture. Shelves are a great option for smaller boxes and items you might not pack.
