What is the best way to store wine long-term? Whether you use MEGA Storage’s warehouse rentals in Panama to store a large collection, or prefer to keep it in a specialized refrigerator at home, follow these tips.
Monitor the temperature
Wine should be kept in a cool environment, ideally between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius, to slow down the aging process. Temperatures above 19 degrees can alter its taste, while temperatures below 11 degrees can dry out the corks and even freeze the bottles. Climate-controlled units are the best option for preservation.
Avoid light
Excessive exposure to light can age your wine collection and affect its flavor. It is necessary to find storage that does not receive direct sunlight. At MEGA Storage, this is not an issue since most of our storage units have controlled interior lighting.
Store in the right direction
Wine bottles should be stored on their sides or tilted towards the cork. Keeping the wine in contact with the cork reduces the chances of it drying out. However, if you plan to open the bottles within a month or two, or if they have screw caps, you can store them upright.
Don’t worry too much about humidity
It is important to maintain an adequate humidity level to prevent corks from drying out (ideally 70% to 80%). However, in humid climates like Panama, the high ambient humidity is usually enough, so it is not always necessary to worry excessively.
Consider rotating the bottles
Gently turning the bottles every few months promotes an even distribution of sediment and prevents the cork from settling in a position that could compromise its integrity, especially for long-term aging wines.
Remember the importance of labeling
Clearly label each bottle with relevant information such as grape variety, vintage, and special notes. A detailed inventory record will make management easier and prevent unpleasant surprises when opening the wrong bottle.
Pro Tip
To protect your high-value collection, always opt for our temperature-controlled units, specifically designed to preserve wine in optimal conditions.
