Comic books are highly collectible, and collecting them has grown from an enjoyable hobby into big business. If they are in pristine condition, they can be extremely valuable. Therefore, it is important not only to properly package and prepare your comics for storage but also to store them in an ideal environment.
Keep Your Hands Clean
Do not touch your comics without first washing and drying your hands thoroughly. This will greatly reduce the likelihood of stains, dirt, and oil spots. Some collectors even use cotton, latex, or nitrile gloves to handle them and completely eliminate skin contact with the comics.
Protect Your Comics
Place individual comics in polypropylene bags with acid-free backing boards. The covers protect comics from fingerprints, scuffs, and moisture. Keeping the backing boards inside the bag will keep the comic rigid and flat, preventing the paper from bending or folding.
Use the Right Boxes
Comics should be stored in acid-free boxes that are specially designed to fit the size and width of your comic books. Comics should be stored standing upright in these boxes. Although corrugated cardboard is common, experts recommend plastic boxes for your most valuable collections.
Choose a Climate-Controlled Unit
Safely storing your comics is the key to preserving your collection. Comics are especially sensitive to light and moisture. A climate-controlled unit that will protect your collection from temperature fluctuations and humid conditions is your best bet.
Never store boxes directly on the floor. Use shelves, or at least a pallet, to keep them several inches off the floor. Standard comic boxes are not designed to support the weight of more than three boxes stacked on top of them.
