Whether you are moving, in the middle of a renovation, or simply need to store furniture, it is important to know how to properly store a mattress in a storage unit. Improper storage can damage or soil it.
Mattress Cleaning and Protection
Storing a mattress is not as simple as moving it directly from the bed frame to the storage unit. Mattresses absorb a large amount of dust, so it’s important to perform a good deep clean. Then, keep your mattress clean by placing it inside a suitable mattress bag; avoid thick plastics that promote bacteria and stick with breathable plastics.
Do Not Place Anything on Top
Putting things on top of your mattress while it is in storage can cause dents or permanent damage. The last thing you want is a mattress that sags in the middle when you take it out of storage.
Space Preparation
Putting a mattress directly on the floor of your storage unit will make it harder to “breathe”. Allow airflow by placing the mattress on wooden pallets. Also, consider climate-controlled storage to keep your belongings better protected from temperature-related damage, helping to prevent mold or odor buildup.
How to store different types of mattresses?
Innerspring mattresses can be stored on their sides for brief periods due to their reinforced internal structure, but memory foam mattresses should never be stored on their sides to prevent them from bending permanently. Hybrid mattresses will need to be rotated periodically even while in storage so as not to wear out the springs.
