Cleaning Fishing Rods
The beginning of seasonal storage is an excellent time for a deep clean, as dirt on the rod, reel, and guides can cause deterioration. There are main areas that need attention: the line guides, the rod itself, the reel, the line, and the grip.
The force of the line against the guides can misalign them or wear down their surface, and water can cause rust. It is essential that the guide surface remains perfectly smooth. The rod and grips should be wiped down with a damp cloth with white vinegar or a mild detergent, and then carefully dried.
Loosening the Fishing Line
The fishing line must always be loosened. Nothing good comes from storing a fishing rod under tension. If it has been used in saltwater, remove the line completely, rinse it, and let it dry separately.
How to Store?
You don’t need to store rods in a sealed container, as this can trap moisture. Simply keep them in climate-controlled storage. The rods should be stored flat or straight vertically. It’s bad for the rod to be under the slightest pressure, as over time it could warp.
Long-Term Storage
For long-term storage, climate control and proper placement are vital. A rod leaning against a wall for a couple of years will often have to be discarded. Place them on a shelf with proper center support or on a flat surface. If the rods are going to be moved, the best plan is to put several in a strong cardboard box for support.
