Preparing and storing clothes long-term is relatively simple. However, it is important to follow the right steps so that clothing retains its best appearance for as long as possible. Keep them in mind when storing your garments in our storage units in Panama.
Take an inventory of your clothes
Taking an inventory of all your clothing prevents you from forgetting what you stored and helps you save money by avoiding unnecessary purchases. Be sure to include the item’s name, a description with its size, and the exact location where it is stored.
Clean and prepare your clothes
It is very important that you carefully wash and dry your clothes before storing them. This will reduce the chances of mold growing. A clothing steamer can be useful for refreshing, and for clothes that cannot be washed, vacuum them on low suction with a mesh in between.
Store clothes in a cool, dry place
The location must be cool, dry, dark, and have good airflow. Avoid ultraviolet light by using opaque containers and keep them away from direct sunlight. Avoid airtight containers long-term so clothes can breathe, and keep them away from extreme heat which can break fibers.
Use acid-free boxes for packing
Acid-free archival boxes are a great solution. Another option is to use cardboard or wooden boxes, lined with white sheets that will cushion and protect your clothes.
Additional Tips
Avoid wire hangers; opt for plastic, wood, or padded ones. Use breathable cotton covers, minimize creases by using wardrobe boxes, and separate delicate garments with acid-free tissue paper.
